What house interiors work covers
House interiors is the finishing side of a home: the walls, ceilings, floors, woodwork and fitted storage that decide how a room looks and feels once the builders have gone. It sits between small repairs and a full renovation. Most jobs are one or two rooms, planned so that each trade follows the last in the right order and the room is only disrupted once.
Painting and decorating
Decorating is the job most people start with, and the result depends almost entirely on preparation. Cracks are filled, old gloss is sanded, stains are sealed and the ceiling is done before the walls. The painting and decorating page explains the method, and the room painting cost guide sets out what changes the price.
Floors
A new floor changes a room more than almost anything else, but it has to go down on a sound, level base. Laminate, engineered wood and luxury vinyl plank are fitted after the walls are finished and before the skirting goes back, so the edges are hidden neatly. Details are on the flooring page.
Skirting, architrave and doors
Fresh skirting and architrave give a room crisp edges and cover the gaps left by new floors. Mitres are cut tight, joints are filled and the woodwork is painted last. See skirting and architrave for profiles and fitting.
Walls and ceilings
Where walls or ceilings are cracked, holed or have been opened up by another trade, they are made good before decorating. Damaged boards are cut out and patched on plasterboard and ceiling repairs, and new partitions to split a room or form a cupboard are covered on stud walls. Major structural changes, such as removing a load bearing wall, are left to the right specialist.
Fitted storage
Alcoves either side of a chimney breast are ideal for shelves and cupboards built to fit the space exactly, which makes better use of a room than freestanding furniture. The options are explained on alcove shelving and cupboards.
The right order for an interior job
Interior work follows a set sequence: repairs and any new walls first, then filling and preparation, ceilings and walls, then floors, then skirting and architrave, and finally the last coat on the woodwork. Working in that order means nothing finished is damaged by the next stage. When several of these jobs are booked together, the quotation sets them out in that order so you can see how long each room will be out of use.
