Builders and property repairs in Hoo St Werburgh and the Hoo Peninsula

The Hoo Peninsula is the ridge of chalk, clay and sand hills between the Thames and Medway estuaries, ringed by drained marsh. Danny is based in Rochester ME3, the same postcode area as the Hoo Peninsula, so Hoo St Werburgh and the villages beyond it are close by.

Marsh ground and garden work

Much of the peninsula is alluvial silt marsh, drained for grazing and held back by sea walls that go back to Roman attempts, with clay on the higher ground. Neither is forgiving under a patio or a fence line. Paving needs a well compacted sub-base and a fall that sheds water, and fence posts need setting deep enough not to rock in soft ground. The fencing page explains how runs are set out.

Wind off two estuaries makes this an exposed landscape, so fences and gates take a battering. Sturdier posts, firm panel fixings and, where it suits, a more open board pattern are worth discussing for gardens facing open marsh.

Villages across the peninsula

The peninsula is a scatter of villages rather than a town, so work further out is best grouped into a full day.

  • Hoo St Werburgh and High Halstow
  • Cliffe and Cliffe Woods at the western end
  • Allhallows and St Mary Hoo towards the east
  • Upnor, Kingsnorth and Frindsbury Extra on the Medway side
  • Isle of Grain at the far end

Councils and conservation areas

Most of the peninsula is in Medway, but Higham and Shorne parishes at the western edge are in Gravesham, so the council to ask depends on the village. Cliffe, St Mary Hoo and Upnor are conservation areas, which can restrict changes to the outside of a house, front boundaries included.

Across Medway, 80.5% of homes rely on mains gas alone for heating, and 37.7% are terraced, so most village bathrooms work around an existing gas boiler. Any boiler or gas pipework change is left to a Gas Safe engineer.

Hoo Peninsula questions answered

Much of the ground is clay or drained marsh silt, which moves and holds water. A compacted sub-base and a proper fall stop the paving settling.

No. Higham and Shorne at the western edge are in Gravesham; most of the rest of the peninsula is Medway.

Upnor, Cliffe and St Mary Hoo are conservation areas, so check before changing the outside of a house or its front boundary.
