Fencing Maidstone: new garden fences and gates
If your Maidstone garden needs a new boundary, CRF Services Ltd installs and replaces domestic fences and gates across the town. Danny travels in from Rochester, so Maidstone fencing is planned as whole days on site, with posts, panels and the old fence dealt with in one go rather than spread over several short visits.
Front boundaries and Article 4 streets
Maidstone is the county town of Kent, and its older streets carry more planning protection than most. Article 4 directions cover the Holy Trinity area and individual properties on Earl Street, Albion Place and Clarendon Place, removing some of the permitted development rights a homeowner would normally have. A replacement front fence, a new gate or a low front wall there can need consent even when it looks like a like for like swap.
There are also around 305 listed buildings and seven conservation areas: Maidstone Town Centre, All Saints Church, Holy Trinity Church, Chillington House, Ashford Road, Rocky Hill and Loose Valley. Back garden fences are usually more straightforward, but anything facing the street in those areas is worth raising with Maidstone Borough Council, under Kent County Council, before materials are ordered.
Two hills and sloping gardens
The Medway cuts through a greensand ridge at Maidstone, so the town sits on two opposite hills, with the Len and the Loose Stream joining the river here. Plenty of gardens therefore fall away from the house or across the plot. On a slope, a fence is either stepped, with each panel set level and the posts taking the drop, or raked so the boards follow the ground. Gravel boards are cut to close the gaps underneath, and the line is set out so the steps are even rather than lurching.
Across Maidstone borough 25.9% of homes are detached and 33.3% semi-detached, so many boundaries are shared with one neighbour on each side, while estates such as Shepway and Park Wood have runs shared by several gardens. Agreeing the line and the post side with neighbours before the day saves arguments later.

Height limits and planning checks
In most gardens a fence up to 2m can go up without planning permission, but a front boundary beside a road is limited to 1m without permission, and a listed house or an Article 4 property can need an application even for a like for like replacement. If you are unsure, check with Maidstone Borough Council first, and read the guide to who owns the fence and how high it can be.
Combining fencing with garden work
A new fence is often part of a bigger change to the garden. Patios, lawns and decking in the town are covered on the Maidstone landscaping page, and the Maidstone area page lists everything else carried out locally.
