Cost to replace a bath with a walk in shower

Swapping the bath for a shower: the price, the plumbing and the decisions that matter.

Replacing a bath with a walk in shower usually falls in the 7,000 to 9,000 pounds band on this site's bathroom pricing, because the job is treated as a layout change rather than a straight swap. The shower tray needs its own waste with a proper fall, the supply pipes move, and the walls where the bath sat need tiling to full height. Where the tray can sit in the old bath position and reuse the drainage route, the work is simpler and the price sits nearer the lower end.

Why a bath to shower conversion is priced as a layout change

A bath waste sits low and close to the wall. A shower tray needs a trap that fits underneath it and enough fall to the soil pipe for water to clear quickly, or the tray floods while the shower runs. Getting that fall right often means lifting floorboards, running a new waste route or raising the tray on a riser kit.

The walls change too. Most baths have tiles only along their edge, while a shower needs every surface the water can reach tiled and properly protected behind the tiles. That extra tiling and preparation is a large part of the difference between this job and a like for like suite swap.

Swap bath for shower: what the job involves

Seen from the start of the job to the finish, the conversion follows a fairly fixed order.

  • Strip out the bath, panel, tiles and any boxing
  • Check the floor and joists where the bath stood
  • Plan and fit the new waste and supply positions
  • Board and tank the wet zone before tiling
  • Fit the tray, screen and shower valve
  • Tile, grout, seal and test before handover

Walk in shower instead of bath: is it the right call?

If the house has another bath, or nobody in it uses the bath, a generous walk in shower is usually the better use of the space. It is easier to step into, quicker to clean and makes a small room feel larger.

If it is the only bath in a family house, think about who might need one later. Young children are easier to wash in a bath, and some buyers expect one. A shower over a new bath with a fixed screen is a middle route that keeps both options.

What pushes the price up or down

The biggest single factor is the waste. A tray that drains straight into the old bath waste route keeps costs down. A tray in a new position, or one that must be set low for a level threshold, adds labour.

Other drivers are the size of the screen, the type of valve and whether it needs a new electrical supply for an electric shower, and the tiles you choose. Large format and natural stone tiles take longer to cut and lay than standard ceramic.

Walk in shower or wet room?

A walk in shower uses a low tray and a fixed glass panel. A wet room tiles the whole floor to a drain. Wet rooms need more preparation and are more sensitive to how the floor is built, which is covered in the wet room versus shower enclosure guide on this site.
